Keeping your Stormshield appliance up to date is essential for both security and stability. Updates are released regularly and can be applied quickly, regardless of your hardware model.
The procedure below covers the update of two appliances — a Stormshield SN200 and an SN300. Both were updated simultaneously without any issues.
Why update?#
Firmware updates deliver security patches and stability improvements. The Stormshield teams are well aware of the stakes involved in network security, and each release brings its share of fixes and optimizations.
Major version upgrades also improve general performance and stability. The update process is straightforward: once downloaded, the new firmware is applied automatically.
Make sure to regularly back up your appliance configurations to multiple locations to avoid any unpleasant surprises.
How to update#
Log in as an administrator on the Stormshield appliance you want to update. Remember to use HTTPS and append /admin to the URL: https://<stormshield-ip>/admin.
Once authenticated, go to Configuration, then click Maintenance. You will land on the System update tab by default — that is the one we need.
Before installing an update, you need to download it. Click Search for new updates — the list will populate with all available versions for your appliance.
Unless instructed otherwise, you can select the latest available version. However, be careful with major version jumps. For example:
If you are on version 2.4.2 and versions up to 3.1.0 are available, do not jump directly to 3.1.0. First update to 2.7.0, then to 3.1.0. This reduces the risk of compatibility issues during the upgrade.
Click Download this update next to the desired version. The firmware file is typically around 30 MB.
Once downloaded, click the three-dot button next to the Select update field and choose the downloaded file. Make sure the option Save the active partition to the backup partition before updating the firewall is checked — this allows you to roll back if something goes wrong.
After selecting the file, do not click Update firewall immediately. Instead, open Advanced configuration and click Download firmware. This pre-loads the new firmware onto the appliance without interrupting access right away, giving you the option to defer the actual installation.
To apply the update, select Activate the previously downloaded firmware and click Update.
From this point on, the update process is running. Depending on the firmware size, installation can take between 4 and 10 minutes. A backup phase runs first, followed by the installation phase.
Occasionally, the progress counter may reset — just wait it out. To verify the appliance is back online, try pinging it. If it responds, the appliance is up — refresh the administration page even if the progress bar is still showing. If it does not respond, continue waiting.
Do not reboot the appliance during the update — this could cause a critical system error and potentially brick the device.
Once the system is back up, log in again to the admin interface. Your Stormshield is now up to date. Do not forget your backups!
